Since 2000, Marcellini’s Martial Arts Academy has been a premier training center known for excellence in the Inland Empire. We pride ourselves in having safe and effective programs and our mission is to provide an authentic martial arts program that develops the physical and mental character of our students. Our students come from all throughout the Inland Empire and beyond to benefit from the quality of instruction and the technical efficiencies of our system
Sam Marcellini and the legendary Gracie family have developed unique and effective programs that give students the absolute best training available. Children learn effective self-defense techniques while developing focus, confidence and discipline. Our children’s programs put a strong emphasis on character development. The qualities that students develop in our classrooms will help them succeed in all areas of life. Adult programs are designed to teach students valuable techniques while providing students with a complete and fun workout. Classes are a great way to relieve stress and get in shape.
Classes focus on the technical and artistic aspects of the martial arts so that students achieve high levels of self-defense without injury. We teach our students how to apply proper leverage and technique so they don’t have to rely on physical conditioning to be able to defend themselves. Our chief instructor, Sam Marcellini, has been very involved with both academies and he personally teaches most of the classes. Sam is an educator with a passion for promoting mental clarity, self-awareness, and personal growth.
Our unique programs can help anyone –regardless of age or fitness level- develop effective self-defense skills in a short period of time. Classes are taught by some of the most credible martial arts instructors in the world.
Sam Marcellini began his training at the age of five in “kyokushin kaikan” – a highly disciplined, full contact style of karate that is rarely found in the United States. This rigorous and true-to-life training became the groundwork upon which he built his future vision, eventually culminating into a more serious and effective approach to martial arts.
Sam Marcellini later trained with Grandmaster Gene Brigham. Without question, some of the greatest teachings the Grandmaster passed on were the spiritual and philosophical side of martial arts. This knowledge complemented and provided Sam a balance that gives him a definite advantage as an instructor and martial artist.
Sam went on to train in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with Royce Gracie & his father Grandmaster Helio Gracie, the mastermind of what’s known & respected worldwide as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Sam also trained a great deal with Royler Gracie, Rener Gracie and Rodrigo Gracie. Sam trained with Royce for 18 years & was Royce’s sparring partner for some of his fight preparations; Sam Marcellini, The 2nd person ever to receive a black belt from Royce Gracie in California. First person ever to become a certified Muay Thai kickboxing instructor under Rob Kaman in the US.
Sam also spent 5 years training with Rob Kaman, a Nine-Time World Muay Thai Kickboxing Champion, who is considered by many experts as the greatest kickboxer that has ever lived. In fact, Sam was the very first certified instructor under Rob Kaman and according to Kaman, his best student in the U.S.A
Sam Marcellini started teaching at a very young age and dedicated his career to teaching. Sam’s students commute from far away locations throughout the Inland Empire, Orange County, L.A. and San Diego to train with him. His student body consists of mainly everyday people and children as well as other professional instructors, competitors, martial arts school owners, law enforcement, and beginners who simply can’t find a safe place to train.

Royce Gracie moved to Torrance, California at the age of 18 and started teaching with his brother Rorion Gracie. Years later in 1990 they opened the Gracie Academy in Torrance, which the brothers and their father Grandmaster Helio Gracie would teach the classes. Royce left the Gracie Academy in 2002 to do seminars, train elite martial artist and continue his fighting career.
Royce’s reputable career as a fighter began in 1993 after defeating three opponents in the first Ultimate Fighting Championship. This was a historic time in the UFC when there were almost no rules, no time limits, and no weight divisions. Discipline after discipline was defeated by the slight 6’1”, 180 pound Royce Gracie.
His opponents consistently outweighed him by more than 50 pounds. He went on to win 3 UFC titles and today is the only man in the history of no holds barred matches to successfully defeat four opponents in one night.
Royce Gracie had many other memorable fights including the longest MMA match in history (90 min) against Japanese Superstar Kazushi Sakuraba in PRIDE Grand PRIX 2000, and total domination of the Olympic Judo Gold Medalist Hidehiko Yoshida in PRIDE Shockwave 2003.
His largest opponent yet was Sumo Grand Champion Akebono, 6′ 8″ 486lbs. Royce Gracie vs. Akebono was the main event of K-1 Premium Dynamite New Years Eve show on 12/31/2004. Royce Gracie defeated the giant in just 2min and 13sec with a shoulder lock. Royce’s success has opened the eyes of many disbelievers to the importance of leverage and technique in grappling. In November of 2003, Royce Gracie was the first fighter to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.
His list of students is enormous. Royce Gracie has taught many celebrities including: Chuck Norris, Ed O’Neal, Guy Ritchie and Nicholas Cage. He has also been very active with the CIA, FBI, DEA, Secret Service, Army Rangers, Army Special Forces, Navy Seals and many sheriff and police departments. Royce Gracie teaches here at Marcellini’s Martial Arts Academy on a regular basis. Sam Marcellini trained with Royce for nearly 20 years; Sam was Royce’s training and sparring partner for some of his most important fights. Sam Marcellini is one of the very few guys who has spent a lot of time training with Royce Gracie personally.
Since we opened 16 years ago, Royce Gracie has taught classes at this academy at least twice a year & has presented all of our adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students with their belts.
